Prayer

A Conversation with God

There’s something unexplainably special, when we sit down in front of a warm fire on a cozy winter night and talk with friends who love us. The weather outside might be windy and boisterous, but the weather in front of the fire is safe, warm, and inviting. We talk about little things; we talk about monumental things. Nothing is really taboo when you are with a close, trusted friend. You may come in feeling discouraged or confused and your friend helps bring things into focus and lightens your load. Prayer is a lot like that. We are having a conversation with God. We talk to Him and He speaks quietly to us; we come away with a different perspective and our load is lighter.

Jesus’ disciples spent all their time with Him. They shared meals, saw Him perform miracles, and shared in the dirt from the dusty roads they traveled. Yet even though they were with Him all the time they asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus went on to teach them what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” It’s a very special way of praying but it is not the only way. What’s most important is that you just start talking to God. He is waiting to have a conversation with you. He knows all about you and wants to help you in every way. When you are tempted, He is there. When you are discouraged, He is there. In your victories and in your failures, He is there.
Praying is like learning to walk; you take it a step at a time. Before you know it, you are moving comfortably with very little problem. So, rather than look at others and say, “Well, I can’t pray like that,” just start praying your way and He will be there. As you learn to pray and get close to your best friend, Jesus, you will realize that it is the most precious time of your day. I encourage you to just start, right now, and see what great things He will do in your life. A line from a song from long ago says, “He’s as close as the mention of His name.” He is waiting to show you all the wonderful things He has prepared for those who love Him. Jesus is calling. Can you hear Him? He’s calling your name.
